Madame C.J. Sarah Breedlove, known as Walker, was born on December 23, 1867. He was the first child in his family born to freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. He and his wife started a business, which he promoted as an independent hairdresser and retailer of cosmetic creams. He started selling his products to black women by going door to door. By 1917, approximately 20,000 women were trained and employed at the company. At that time, companies selling products to black women were putting pictures of non-black women on the packages to meet European beauty standards. But Walker, a black African-American woman, put her own picture on the packages. Walker also has the distinction of being the first woman to become a self-made millionaire.
